Fuelboat.co.uk emerged from a critical need within the UK’s waterways community: connecting canal boat residents with essential fuel services. Traditional fuel boats, which deliver coal, diesel, and other supplies directly to canal boats, lacked a centralized information resource. The project required creating an intuitive platform that could handle complex, constantly updating service information while remaining accessible to a diverse user base.
The UK’s canal network hosts thousands of residential boats that rely on fuel boats for essential supplies. However, finding accurate information about fuel boat services, routes, and schedules was historically difficult, relying on word of mouth and scattered social media posts. The community needed a reliable, centralized resource that could be easily updated and accessed by both boaters and fuel boat operators.
Our research revealed that both boaters and fuel boat operators needed different things from the platform. Boaters required quick access to service information based on their location, while operators needed an easy way to keep their information current. The solution needed to balance comprehensive data presentation with simple, intuitive navigation, considering that many users would be accessing the site with limited mobile connectivity.
The platform needed to handle complex data relationships while remaining fast and reliable, even in areas with poor internet connectivity. This included managing detailed route information, multiple contact methods, service schedules, and real-time filtering across multiple criteria – all while maintaining simplicity for users on both mobile and desktop devices.
We developed a high-performance, mobile-first directory that combines powerful search and filtering capabilities with straightforward data presentation. The platform features real-time filtering across multiple criteria, GPS-ready location information, and a streamlined update submission system that maintains data accuracy through community participation.
The project presented unique data modeling challenges due to the complex nature of fuel boat operations. We developed a sophisticated JSON schema that could handle multiple operating areas, varying schedules, different service types, and road delivery options, while remaining maintainable and performant. This data structure powers the real-time filtering system while ensuring future extensibility.
The platform features a complex filtering system that processes multiple concurrent criteria without page reloads. Search parameters combine location, services, operating status, and text searches, updating results instantly through efficient DOM manipulation. The filter architecture maintains performance even with extensive data by using optimized array operations and smart re-rendering strategies.
Given the variable connectivity along UK waterways, we implemented a robust progressive enhancement strategy. The core functionality works without JavaScript, while enhanced features like real-time filtering and interactive maps are added when available. The application remains functional even in poor network conditions, ensuring essential information remains accessible.
The entire application is built with a mobile-first approach, crucial for users accessing the directory from phones while on the canal network. We achieved sub-second initial load times through careful asset optimization, efficient CSS delivery, and minimal JavaScript footprint. The responsive design adapts seamlessly across devices while maintaining functionality.
We developed a streamlined update submission system that balances ease of use with data quality. The form dynamically adapts based on update type, guiding users to provide necessary information while maintaining data structure integrity. This system enables the community to keep information current while ensuring submitted updates maintain consistent formatting and completeness.
